On Tuesday 16th October, on the occasion of the international World Food Day, Sting organized an awareness-raising event about food waste.

Once the office transformed in a very nice cinema, Sting team screened a short inspiring Ted Talk on food waste reality followed by the documentary “Wasted! A story of food waste”. This documentary investigates causes and solutions of food waste through the eyes of famous chefs who are transforming what most people consider scraps into incredible dishes creating a more secure food system.
Then, the participants got the opportunity to discuss about the movie and to share anecdotes on what they witness on a regular basis regarding food waste issue.
Even if Egypt is way behind other countries regarding food waste management (Egypt is one of the highest contributors to global food waste with 73 kilograms annual amount of food waste per person) some solutions start to emerge. The participants brainstormed on the actions that could be undertaken at a personal, familial and community level in order to tackle food waste issues.
This short discussion resulted in a set of possible daily actions to implement in order to have an immediate impact on the individual production of food waste:
Adopting a more conscious approach of food when buying it: buying smaller quantities of food and learning how to say NO to special promotions pushing you to buy more than needed, buying a product only when you don’t have any more of it, buying green and local
Reusing food: trying not to waste food by throwing it after meals but instead keeping it for later, giving away your eatable extra food to communities in need, if not suitable for human consumption, feeding animals with it.
Raising awareness among your relatives and your community as a whole.
The evening continued around a shared dinner thanks to the amazing dishes that each one of the participants brought with them. A very nice way to close this event and to celebrate our plan of actions and the fact of being together.
The participants left with a better understanding of the issues of food waste and are all motivated to start changing their lifestyles from today! They will also share on the long term the different initiatives they hear about or take part in and we hope this community will only grow bigger and bigger and have a real impact on every citizen!
