In occasion of the International Day of Sign Languages on Sunday 23rd September, we organized a workshop at Sting to raise awareness about sign languages!
The workshop, focused on the Egyptian Sign Language, was conducted by Esraa Emad, deaf from the age of 5 and Sign Language Trainer.
15 participants attended the workshop, both deaf and hearing people. Various topics were broached during two hours and many activities were organized. The participants got the chance to learn the history of Sign Language as well as to learn basic sign language and how to interact for the first time with a deaf person. They thus gained a deeper understanding on the problems and challenges faced by deaf people.
Mostafa, hearing participant, was very pleased by such an evening:
"I liked the place, the organizers, the games and how everyone was so friendly. It was also very interesting to learn more about the sign language and the problems deaf people face in Egypt and worldwide."
It was a really fun and enriching evening.
Following the evening, Ahmed, deaf participant, shared his opinion:
" I hope all deaf people could learn how to write right Arabic "
Indeed, most deaf people have issues writing correct Arabic due to the way Sign Language is designed, which does not follow any existing sentence structure.
Because deaf people and their integration in the society matter, Sting is focusing on building bridges and fostering exchange and understanding between deaf and hearing people.
Stay tuned!
